Remembering Claude 'Bugs' Weiss: 3B Ice Cream founder was 'a fine gentleman' - PennLive.com

Claude “Bugs” Weiss was the founder of 3B Ice Cream.

Weiss, 88, died July 24.

He was a 1948 graduate of Halifax High School. He served in the Pennsylvania National Guard during the Korean War.

After his service in the military, he worked at Speece’s Dairy in Dauphin, which inspired him to start his own ice cream business.

In 1969 he opened 3B Ice Cream in Dauphin. In 1972 he opened a second location in Linglestown. The Duncannon store opened in 1986 and the Derry Street location in 1990.

Two employees, Josh and Kelly Rissinger, in 2013 bought the business.

Weiss was a member of the Pegasus Travel Club and worked as a flight attendant with his wife, Dolores. He went to Super Bowl games, Penn State bowl games and was a Hershey Bears season-ticket holder.

His family said he was “dependable and kind, always willing to help a friend in need.”

Surviving are his wife, Dolores; a son, Robert and his wife, Diane; three stepsons, James Fearn Jr., Scot Fearn and Kenneth Fearn; seven grandchildren, Jessica Weiss, Emily Weiss, Brandell Fearn, Nikki Yeager, Zachary Fearn, Olivia Fearn, Tracy Plum; and a great-granddaughter, Ellianna Fearn.

From his guest book:

  • “I never lived in Dauphin after 1960 but every vacation trip back home included at least one visit to 3Bs for ice cream. What pleasure he brought to numerous families! I’m glad to see that he enjoyed life and included family and friends. He will be missed but you all have many good memories of a fine gentleman.”

-- Joyce Oviatt Hamman, Aiken, S.C.

On the 3B Ice Cream Facebook page, the Rissingers said,

  • “He was not only our employer, but our mentor, friend, and extended family. He had faith in us years ago to continue the business when he no longer could, but he will forever be ‘3B.’ We strive every day to make him proud.”

On that post, customers and employees referred to him as “a local icon,” “the very best guy around,” “an amazing guy” and “a wonderful man.”
